“From soil to supper –
one couple’s journey to nourish their family,
their community, and the planet.”
About the Film
In the wake of a global pandemic and the birth of their youngest child, yoga teachers Travis Eliot and Lauren Eckstrom set out to grow a backyard garden in Los Angeles—and to prepare a meal using only what they’d grown.
With guidance from food advocate Oliver English and moments of joy shared with their children, Grow a Garden explores the challenges of modern food systems, the wisdom of nature, and the healing power of soil.
Filmed across three seasons, this short documentary is a celebration of resilience, connection, and what’s possible when we return to the earth.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
“Grow a Garden began during a season of personal and global transition. After years in a small apartment, my wife Lauren and I moved to a home with just enough space to try something new—a garden. We had no experience, little time, and even less certainty. But we had questions: How do we nourish our children in a world of broken food systems? What does it mean to feed your family from the earth?
Over the course of several months—and with guidance from Oliver English—we planted, stumbled, learned, and finally harvested. The result was more than vegetables. It was a deeper connection to each other, to our kids, to nature, and to the quiet magic of doing something by hand.
Grow a Garden is not a tutorial. It’s an invitation. If we can do it, so can you.”
